NDIS Updates

“Thriving Kids” Program

The Federal Government will fund a $2 billion program to support children with mild to moderate autism or developmental delay outside the NDIS. The Victorian Government has raised concerns about limited consultation and the delay to promised foundational supports.

New NDIS Provider Rules

From July 2025, services like Support Coordination & Supported Independent Living must be registered with the NDIS Quality & Safeguards Commission, bringing stronger standards for providers across Victoria.

Victorian Disability Worker
Commission Updates

The VDWC has recently made important changes that affect disability support workers in Victoria:

New Registration Standards

From 1 October 2025, updated registration standards will apply. These will cover:

  • Criminal history checks
  • English language requirements
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) obligations
  • Workers should review the new standards to make sure they remain compliant.

Prohibition Orders

The Commission has increased its enforcement activity. Recently, a worker was fined $15,000 for breaching an Interim Prohibition Order. All support workers are reminded to keep up to date with VDWC’s Prohibition Orders register to ensure you are working safely and legally.

Training & Qualifications

Some training providers have recently had qualifications cancelled by the national training regulator (ASQA). If your training was with one of these providers, check that your qualification is still recognised. The VDWC website has guidance for affected workers.

A DAY OUT WITH GRAEME

“At Complete Nursing and Home Care, we love celebrating the everyday moments that bring joy and independence to our participants. This month, we are excited to share Graeme’s story.”

Graeme recently enjoyed a wonderful day out with the support of one of our dedicated support workers. His outing began with a trip to Epping Plaza, where he did a bit of shopping.

Afterwards, he treated himself to a fresh haircut, walking out feeling neat, refreshed, and ready to take on the day with confidence.

No outing is complete without a good meal, so Graeme and his support worker stopped for a tasty lunch, enjoying both the food and the friendly atmosphere.

For Graeme, it was more than just shopping or lunch. It was about having the freedom to get out, make choices, and enjoy his community with the right support by his side.

MEET DONNA: A HEART THAT LISTENS

Donna – Afterhours Coordinator

In this issue, we are shining the spotlight on Donna, our amazing Afterhours Coordinator, whose caring nature, listening ear, and dedication remind us that sometimes the smallest acts can make the biggest difference.

Q: Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Donna: Hello everyone! I’m excited to share a little bit about myself in this month’s spotlight. I am a happy wife, a proud mom of three energetic boys, and a fur mom to a 7-year-old Labrador named Teddy who keeps our household lively. Family is my anchor, and they inspire me every day to bring the same care and patience into the work I do.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being an Afterhours Coordinator?

Donna: What I enjoy most about being an Afterhours Coordinator are the genuine and meaningful conversations I get to have with our clients. Some share stories about their day, others recite poems they’ve written, and sometimes they simply need a safe space to release their frustrations. Regardless of the reason for the call, I always feel a sense of fulfilment knowing that by the end of our conversation, clients leave feeling lighter, happier, and more cheerful.

Q: How long have you been working as an Afterhours Coordinator, and what did you do before this role?

Donna: I’ve been an Afterhours Coordinator for 3 years now, and before stepping into this role, I spent 9 years in the customer service industry. During that time, I worked across different areas. Those experiences gave me a strong foundation in empathy, patience, and problem-solving, which I continue to carry with me today.

Q: Do you have a fun fact about yourself?

Donna: I never expected that listening could be such a powerful gift — it not only brightens someone else’s day, but it uplifts mine as well.

Q: What motivates you each day?

Donna: The knowledge that even the smallest act of listening can make a lasting difference in someone’s life, and that inspires me to give my best in every call.

Eunice – July
Eunice

Hi, my name is Eunice. I’m someone who enjoys both the comfort of being indoors and the excitement of exploring new places.

I love travelling, staying active, and discovering new experiences. In my downtime, I enjoy reading, trying out different recipes, and watching movies or documentaries. I also like connecting with people and learning about their cultures and stories.

I absolutely love animals and enjoy connecting with them whenever I can. I’m even thinking about pursuing veterinary medicine in the future, since caring for animals is something I’m really passionate about.

A fun fact about me is that even though I love being active, I also really enjoy quiet moments with a good book or a cup of coffee, it’s my way of balancing adventure with relaxation.

Kerrie – August
Kerrie

My name is Kerrie, and I’ve been a Support Worker with Complete Nursing and Home Care for nine years.

I really enjoy the work I do. I find supporting clients and helping them live as independently and comfortably as possible very rewarding.

In my spare time, I like to unwind by building Lego sets, which I find both relaxing and a fun way to be creative.

Use Assistive Equipment
Always use hoists, slide sheets, transfer belts, or other aids if available.
Work at waist level where possible.
Maintain Safe Posture and Movement
Use a wide, stable base.
Bend your knees, not your back.
Keep your back straight.
Hold load close to your body.
Avoid twisting – turn with your feet.
Ask for Help and Know your Limits
Lift only 5kgs and below.
Push, don’t pull (use body weight to assist).
Never attempt a two-person lift alone.
Report Hazards and Faulty Equipment

Always report any unsafe equipment, environmental hazards, or near-misses to your supervisor immediately so that corrective action can be taken promptly.

SpringSafety

As we head into spring, keep these quick reminders in mind when supporting participants:

  • Allergies & Asthma: Watch pollen levels.
  • Slips & Falls: Be mindful of wet surfaces and safe mobility.
  • Sun Safety: Encourage sunscreen, hats, and hydration.
  • Community Outings: Plan around crowds & support sensory needs.

your mental health

Life can get busy, and it’s easy to forget to pause and check in. Just like our physical health, looking after our mental health is essential. Sometimes, even a simple “How are you really going?” can make all the difference.

Take a moment to check in on a colleague, a friend, or family member – and remember to check in with yourself, too.

Small conversations can lead to big support. If you ever need someone to talk to, support is available through our EAP.

Let’s keep supporting each other, every day.
